International Builders Show in Orlando is Coming Up

Louisville custom home builderWe’re heading back to the annual International Builders Show in Orlando Florida. Yes, somebody has to go to Florida in February, so we drew the short straw. We’re one of the Louisville Builders taking one for the team.

This show has been an almost annual event the last few years. We attend this show in part because I serve on the local HBAL Board of Directors, the HBAK Executive Board, and in part because even us older builders like to keep up with our industry. As we’re using Twitter, Facebook, and blogging, we have to keep up with all the latest products and trends in our industry.

Every year, we come back with new ideas and updates on the pros and cons of green building and developing, new regulations making home building more difficult, the state of the housing market, and the latest product enhancements that affect our customers. Those are all very good reasons to make the annual trip.

This year’s NAHB International Builders Show is February 8-11. Normally, this would be a perfect time for builders to take in a conference, although this year we actually have two, possibly three custom homes we’re starting in January and early February. We’re also finishing up a dental office addition for our friends over at A Winning Smile Dental Center in Okolona. If you’re looking for a Louisville Dentist, they are expanding and accepting new patients. We won’t complain about the activity, or the break to sharpen our saw.

P.S. If I can get my new iPhone 4 working before the trip, I will be live tweeting, shooting videos, and blogging about the show like in years past. Stay tuned for more.

International Builder Show Post 1

After visiting the 2010 International Builders Show in Las Vegas this past month, we came back with new insights leading to new ideas for upcoming months. It was a great show, and featured many new products and designs for new home buyers and remodeling customers. Some of the most interesting to Buck and I were the new energy saving products including: water saving devices and systems, electrical saving devices and systems and sewage disposal systems. High energy efficient products and building practices were also a big part of the show.

The use of energy efficient building systems and practices, along with integration of solar and wind energy is becoming much more affordable in many areas of the country. This will only continue to improve in the long run. The use of green products will have a definite effect on the cost of building now making it more expensive. This too will become more affordable though as more manufacturers, designers, developers, builders, and consumers enter this arena. Supply and demand have a way of working themselves out. Remember what flat screen TV’s used to cost :)

4 things we’re doing to stay leading edge

The best way to get through tough times is to act. We haven’t been sitting around crying the blues.

  1. I recently became a Certified Renovator, as required by the EPA Renovating Repair and Painting law that takes effect in April 2010.
  2. We recently took courses dealing with drywall specifications and finishes along with painting finishes for new and remodel construction.
  3. I just completed a course concerning ICF forms, and the part they play in the Green Building process.
  4. We will be attending the International Builders Show later this month. We will be attending educational courses concerning upcoming codes and standards changes, green building practices, and other issues. We will be introduced to many of the new products and practices we’ll be using in the future.
